Outline of Hebrews
THE FINISH OF FRAGMENTS
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 1:1-3
"SUNDRY TIMES" (that is, in fragments; not as a complete whole or as a unit [read Is. 28:10-13])
Five Examples of fragmentary revelation in the Old Testament which covers a period of 4000 years (2500 under the Patriarchal Age and 1500 under the Mosaic Age): (a) Genesis 3:15 – Eve’s seed (Jesus) to crush serpent (Satan); (b) Genesis 12:1-3 – Abraham’s seed to bless all nations; (c) Genesis 43:10 – Shiloh come (Jesus) before scepter pass from Judah; (d) Deuteronomy 18:18 – Prophet (Jesus) to be raised up like unto Moses (see fulfilled in Acts 3:22); (e) But "In the fullness of time" (that is, "When the time was ripe; at the proper time") God sent forth His Son (read Gal. 4:4, 5)
"DIVERS MANNERS" (various and different ways)
Dreams (Gen. 31:11)
Visions (Dan. 7:13,14)
Symbols (Judges 6:36-40)
Urim and Thummim (Num. 27:21)
Voices (1 Sam. 28:6)
Directly (to Moses) (Num. 12:6-8)
"BY THE PROPHETS"
The initiative in making a prophet rests with God. The story of Moses’ call is found in Exodus 3 and 4
Only false prophets dare to take the office upon themselves (Jer. 14:14)
Fore-telling is the very essence of the prophetic office, but not necessarily in every instance Often he was used merely to forth-tell about conditions existing at that time
Essentially he is one who speaks on behalf of God (read 1 Pet. 1:20, 21)
"IN THESE LAST DAYS" (or "at the end of these days")
That is, "at the end of the Mosaic Age" (for confirmation read Acts 2:16, 17; 1 John 2:18)
In John 19:30 Jesus cried, "It is finished." Greek word is "telestai" – the word which was written over receipts when bills were paid in full. Christ brought the end of the Law of Moses by fulfilling the Law (read Luke 22:37; Rom, 10:4; Matt. 5:17)
The Law was "nailed to the cross" "Taken out of the way" (Col. 2:14)
Question:Do people today hear God in visions, dreams, etc.
Answer:No, because in these last days He speaks to us "by His Son" – that is, through His Word (Rom. 10:17)
"THE EXPRESS IMAGE" (v. 3)
Comes from Greek word "Charater" which means "A mark or figure burned in or stamped on"
Royal seals were used this way. Jesus had the seal of royalty.
