Small Group Bible Study
ENCOURAGE QUESTIONS

Ever notice how inquisitive children are? They seem determined to ask about everything. “What makes it rain?” “How does Superman fly?” “Why did my goldfish (or Granddaddy) have to die?” “Are we there yet?” It can be annoying, but never boring.

On the other hand, being around most adults can be terribly boring. Many of us never ask questions, holding instead to dull routines and rocking no boats. Could it be that we have lost the sense of excitement about life that little children exhibit so naturally?

Without encouraging questions, it is likely that most any Bible study group will eventually become complacent, mediocre, and smaller.

Sadly, some Bible teachers seem intellectually dead, fearing group involvement, especially someone asking questions, thus disturbing their mental slumber. The spiritually dead actively oppose questions, perhaps because they cannot admit how few real answers they have. Usually they have a dull list of questions; a list that no one other than themselves cares to ask.

The joy of asking questions far outweighs any risks involved. Pray that your Bible study group will rise out of a self-imposed religious rut, coming to know and experience freedom in Christ. Searching for truth is so much more wholesome than dogmatism. All of a sudden one begins to experience a strange but exhilarating feeling of growth in personal spiritual life. Hopefully your group will dare to ask life’s important questions, leaving boredom and emptiness behind. Pray your Small Group Bible Study will reach for lofty goals again, sensing the thrill of spiritual progress.

Enemies of faith often chide believers for being closed-minded, priding themselves on asking “relevant questions” about the human condition. It is sad but true, too many believers give their charge credibility. Too often we lose focus, forgetting the power of Holy Scripture and the Gospel message. Too often believers circle the same stumps, raise the same tired concerns, and chant the same wearisome responses almost in unison. The world passes by, hears nothing of importance being said, and ignores the noise. Jesus said His disciples should be as little children. What traits do you think He had in mind?
