FAITH TO MOVE MOUNTAINS
“If you have faith as a mustard see...say to this mountain, “Move...and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20 NKJV)
Several years ago, I heard a story about a preacher who was on his way to a speaking engagement at a small church in the mountains. It was a rainy, foggy night and the visibility was bad. The preacher failed to negotiate a sharp curve on the mountainous road and his car went over the cliff. Miraculously, the preacher was able to open the car door and grab a small tree growing out of the cliff as the car fell to the bottom. As he grasped the tree tightly to avoid falling, he started yelling for help. He heard a strong voice above him say, “Turn loose, I will catch you.”
The preacher asked, “Who is talking to me?”
he voice said, “It is I, the Lord God, Turn loose and I will catch you.”
Again the preacher asked, “Really, who is talking?”
And again the voice said, “It is I, the Lord God. Do you not have faith in Me?”
The preacher pondered for a few seconds and then asked, “Is anyone else up there?”
God has told us many times through His Word that He will be with us and save us if we have faith in Him. Jesus says, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:24).
Perhaps if the preacher in the story had prayed to God he would have had faith that it was God speaking to him. It would have required a tremendous amount of faith to turn loose. We must strive to have the faith to “turn loose,” and give ourselves over to God, to have the faith that He will do as He has said so many times in His Word.
By having faith, we will believe in Him, confess our sins to Him, and be buried with Him in baptism—the ultimate step of faith.
