GOD’S WARNING AND PROMISE
“For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” (Exodus 20:5-6 NKJV)
In these words you see both a threatening of wrath and a loving, friendly promise, not only to terrify and warn mankind, but also to induce and encourage man to receive and highly esteem God’s Holy Word as a matter of divine earnestness.
Why? Because God, Himself declares how much He is in earnest and how rigidly He will enforce it, namely, that He will severely and terribly punish all who despise and transgress His Word. On the other hand our loving Father quickly reveals how richly He will reward, bless and do all good to those who hold His Word in high esteem; those who are glad to act and live according to God’s Holy Word.
God desires that mankind proceed from a heart which obeys Him only because of fear, lest it should move Him to wrath. Our Holy Father longs for mankind to trust in Him alone, and from love of God, do all that He wishes, because Our Heavenly Father expresses Himself as a friendly Father, offering man grace and blessings.
“Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.”
Pray that your heart will be inclined to obey the will of God, revealed in His Holy Word. Pray that through God, Who through Jesus Christ has perfectly fulfilled the whole Law for us, you will this day be delivered from God’s terrible anger and that He will grant you His promised mercy.
