HONOR YOUR PARENTS
“Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Genesis 47:1-12)
Joseph had the upper hand. His father and brethren relied completely on the mercies of Joseph for their lives. Joseph had every reason to be embittered against his brethren. Yet, he was a sensitive man to the wishes of God. He followed the ordinances of God before they were explicitly given to Moses in the Ten Commandments.
Joseph had great love and honor for his father, Jacob. He had honor for his elders and superiors. Thus Joseph had compassion on his brethren. Remember that Joseph did not know the commandments as they were given at a later date.
Pray that you can follow the example given by Joseph. However, you are more fortunate than he was. You have the Holy Scriptures, the Bible and you have the blessed Messiah. Joseph had only the promise of both. May your belief and faith in Jesus Christ give you the strength to follow Joseph’s pattern. Honor your parents as Joseph honored his father. Honor your superiors and elders as Joseph honored his brethren who were his elders.
Pray that God will give you the strong faith Joseph demonstrated. Pray that you will always love God’s Son, Jesus Christ, Who gives you (through your faith) eternal victory over the grave. Pray for help to see the wisdom that is in God’s Holy Word. And let that wisdom help you to honor all honorable people.
