IN THE EVENING

“In the evening withhold not thy hand.” (Ecclesiastes 11:6)

The preacher, in this case Solomon, wrote “In the evening withhold not thy hand.” When the tasks of the work day are ended, the evening presents opportunities for serving the Lord that day time may restrict. Night and day He taught you, He worked for you, He prayed for you. Finally He gave His hands to be nailed to the cross for you. Can you pamper your body and withhold one of your hands from His service? How can you stir up your idle heart to serve Him?

In the evening of life there are many calls. In the morning there is the vigor of youth and you are apt to think the evening of life brings with it decline and even decay. The morning is short, and the evening seems long, but it brings with it many calls that can be found productive.

Ten dollars is a lot of money to the very poor, but if the very rich invited you into his treasure and said, “Take all you want,” you would spend a very long day, wouldn’t you? In the evening you would still be working.

To some there has been granted a very long evening. If that is your case, you should still be using what you have left. What can you do when you are old? Age can instruct youth. Age can cheer the faint hearted. Age can encourage the desponded. Age can strengthen the lonely. While age has less vigor, still it should have more calm wisdom and the good judgment to share it.

Before you say or think, “I’m too old,” remember it was Solomon who said, “In the evening withhold not thy hand.”
