JOY OF PLEASING GOD

“The blameless in their walk are (God’s) delight.” (Proverbs 11:20)

Consider one aspect of joy: the joy of pleasing God.

Perhaps you have not given much thought to how you can bring joy to God, but Holy Scripture mentions several ways. For example, “There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance” (Luke 15:7). Verse 10 adds, “There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Repentance brings joy to God.

Faith is another source of joy for God. “Without faith it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6). That is the negative side of a positive principle: when you trust God, He is pleased.

In addition to repentance and faith, prayer also brings God joy. “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight” (Proverbs 15:8).

Righteous living is another source of joy to God, as David acknowledged, “I know, O my God, that Thou triest the heart and delightest in uprightness” (1 Chronicles 29:17). Solomon added that those who walk blamelessly are God’s delight (Proverbs 11:20).

Repentance, faith, prayer, and righteous living all please God because they are expressions of love. That is the overarching principle. Whenever you express your love to Him—whether by words of praise or by acts of obedience— you bring Him joy.

Isn’t it thrilling to know that the God of the universe delights in you? It should be! Let that realization motivate you to find as many ways as possible to bring Him joy today.
