LOVE IS THE GREATEST
“... But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). God manifested His love for us by giving the supreme sacrifice—the gift of His Son. Through His death, we have the hope of eternal life, a home in heaven.
Love is a steady direction of one’s will for the good of others. We are commanded to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). How can we show God that we love Him? We show our love by serving and loving others. In Romans 12:9-21, many ways are given to help us show love to our neighbors. Included in those verses are some of these ways:
(1) Love must be sincere.
(2) Hate evil and cling to what is good.
(3) Honor one another above yourself.
(4) Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
(5) Be joyful in hope.
(6) Be patient in affliction.
(7) Be faithful in prayer.
(8) Share with those in need.
(9) Practice hospitality.
(10) Bless those who persecute you.
(11) Rejoice with those who rejoice.
(12) Mourn with those who mourn.
(13) Live in harmony with one another.
(14) Do not be proud. Be willing to associate with people of low position.
(15) Do not be conceited.
(16) Do not repay evil for evil.
(17) Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.
(18) Try to live in peace with everyone.
(19) Do not take revenge.
(20) Overcome evil with good. When we love one another, we have fulfilled the law.
When we keep His commandments we show our love to God, for He says, “If you love me, you will obey what I command” (John 14:15).
Solomon reminds us, “A friend loves at all times...” (Proverbs 17:17).
