MAKING A DECISION
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other...” (Matthew 6:24)
Every day we are faced with making decisions. It may seem small or it may seem great, but decision after decision must be made. Isn’t it great that the Bible guides us in making proper decisions?
In Genesis we are given the story of Joseph. He was sold to slavery. Joseph was then faced with the decision of what to do. He could have given up and spent his life as a servant in the house of his master. He could have attempted to run away or even kill himself. Joseph did none of these things. However, he did the best he could. He arose from slavery and prison to become the second ruler of Egypt because he chose not to give up.
In Luke 15 is the familiar parable of the prodigal son. This young man left home for the far country, where he spent his money in riotous living. When he realized that he had nothing to look forward to, the son decided to return home and admit his mistake. He knew that even as one of his father’s servants he would be secure. Would we have made the decision to go to the far country of sin? Or would we have remained in the father’s house? Would we have decided to return from the far country as the prodigal son did?
In making decisions, you must do several things. First, you must recognize the problem. If you are to make any decision you must know what the problem is. The second thing to do is to get all the relevant facts possible. What is the cause? How do others feel? What are the consequences? Have all the facts helped you to make a good decision, one that you will not regret?
Next, you must ask yourself whether or not you need help. Can I do this alone or do I need help? Should I talk this over with others? If I need help, who should I talk to?
If you should desire to talk it over you should go to the most responsible persons; those whom you respect and honor. If you do not like their advice, you can go to someone else, but always listen to advice.
Lastly, you must take time in prayer and ask God’s guidance and think many times before making any decision.
