PRAYER
(2)
“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1)
Christians are sometimes asked, “Why do you believe in prayer?” The best answer can be illustrated by what happens to a soul when prayer ceases or is prayed amiss. Prayer is to the soul what breath is to the body. No wonder Jesus said, “Men ought always to pray.”
The disciples were quick to recognize their own suffocating weakness in comparison with their Lord’s vital strength. It didn’t take them long to discover what was wrong in their lives. “Lord, teach us to pray.”
They were asking for more than the mere mechanics of prayer. Breathing implies more than the mechanics of the lungs. The great demand is for clean fresh air.
Jesus teaches you the high art of spiritual breathing through prayer. He doesn’t begin with the suffocating desires of our greed. He begins with our one and only need—“Our Father, who art in heaven.” Here is the fresh air that made His life so vitally alive and powerful. Naturally, if you are a Christian, you believe in His kind of prayer.
