In His Name Devotionals
SECOND BY SECOND
“...redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16)
It may surprise you when you learn that next week you will have 10,080 minutes and 604,800 seconds to use. The totals sound too big to handle; and yet, when time comes to us, it is not in wholesale supply. It comes economically, second by precious second. That great bulk of seconds in one week is handed to us to use one at a time.
In each one of those fleeting moments is the raw material for what we call “opportunity.” Any one of those fractions— either by itself or in combination with others—can be the particle of time in which you say, do, or think something vital and worthwhile.
Look at time go by, a steady procession arising from the future, meeting us at the present, taking its resting place in the past. Don’t be saddened by its passing, unless it slips by you without being molded into opportunity.
You may be suffering from the widespread illusion that time repeats itself: tomorrow, you say, we will have another 8 o’clock, another noon, another 6 p.m. But this happens only on the clock, not in reality. These seconds, minutes, and hours that make up today are unique, one of a kind. They are given but once to use and if not used, then lost forever. Use them or lose them.
Deposited by God in your account of time is a number of seconds, minutes, hours, and days that no person knows except our Lord. Each is a precious part of the framework of time in which we execute God’s will.
There is so much to be done for Him and so little to do it. That is why Paul instructs us to “make the most of your time.”
Remember! 86,400 of those swift seconds will march into your life today. They can be regimented into a militant formation to accomplish God’s purpose. Right now they are yours to command and use. This very second is yours, but only for a second!
