SEE THE LIGHT, BE THE LIGHT, SEND THE LIGHT
“...He called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 NKJV)
Remember the song, “I Can See Clearly Now?” Phrases like “the rain has gone” and “bright sunshiny day” come to mind. Quite a contrast, wouldn’t you agree?—bright sunshine versus the rain, which restricts and blurs our view.
These thoughts remind us that we never fully appreciate something until we loose it. Consider your sight. Do you truly appreciate it? Have you ever lost it?
A number of years ago, a friend lost sight in his right eye for two days, due to a sports injury. He often remarked how he could never forget the stinging, burning and darkness. He said, “I thought it would clear just as so many of those ‘pokes’ in the past had. Unfortunately, it didn’t.”
Remembering the incident, he said: “As the doctor examined me on the side lines, I could hear a growing concern in his voice. How many fingers am I holding? I saw nothing. Next, he shined a light directly into my eye. I could sense light but no other image. The diagnosis—hemorrhage.” They took him to a hospital and treated the eye with medication, requiring him to stay in bed for two days. Although being perfectly still for two days was a challenge, the treatment worked and on the second day his vision returned.
It’s not surprising that Jesus Himself, as well as others by inspiration, used the metaphor of light versus darkness to help us understand where we stand with God. Jesus is light—bright, illuminating, a truth that cast no shadows. Sin, on the other hand, seeks cover and thrives upon darkness—thus, the contrast between the combatants.
It’s only after living in physical darkness that we can appreciate the hopelessness of spiritual darkness. And it’s only after physical sight has returned that we can celebrate fully the spiritual light that is Jesus. So see the light, be the light, send the light.
