SPIRITUAL LEADERS
“...to all the saints...including the overseers and deacons.” (Philippians 1:1)
Paul’s salutation includes the “overseers and deacons” at Philippi.
This perhaps may not be a reference to elders and deacons as we know them, but it does imply unity and submission within the church, which brings joy to leaders and followers alike. Emphasizing this, Holy Scripture says, “Obey your leaders, and submit to them; for they keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you” (Hebrews 13:17).
Spiritual leadership is a sacred responsibility. Leaders are to lead, feed, and guard the flock of God, which Christ “purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28). They are accountable to God Himself for the faithful discharge of their duties.
Christians have a sacred responsibility as well: to obey and submit to leaders in the church. “Remember those who led you, who spoke the Word of God to you; and considering the outcome of their way of life, imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7). Paul adds, “Appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give your instruction, and...esteem them very highly in love because of their work” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).
Sadly, today’s society encourages criticism and mistrust of anyone in authority. Verbal assaults and character assassinations are common. Some within the church have adopted this attitude toward their spiritual leaders, whom they often view as functionaries or paid professionals. Consequently, too many Christians today are weak and ineffective from disunity and strife. Too many leaders in the church suffer grief from disobedient and ungrateful children of God.
You must never succumb to this type of mentality. Your leaders deserve your appreciation and esteem, not because they are exceptionally talented or have winsome personalities, but because of the sacred work God has called them to do. Your godly attitude toward spiritual leaders will contribute immeasurable to unity and harmony within the Body of Christ.
