SUNDAY EARTHQUAKE

Matthew says there was an earthquake on Sunday morning, “There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it” (28:2).

Now that was an earthquake! It changed the history of the world from that day forward. Even the people who would like to explain it away as a delusion, psychological reaction, or religious myth still have to deal with the chunks of historical attestation and changed lives in its wake.

God has a way of doing dramatic things to get the attention of people. He sent a flood, devastated Sodom, and parted the waters for two million Jews. He sent manna and quail for forty years. He put a baby into a virgin’s womb. And He left a tomb empty on Sunday morning following the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth!

Jesus of Nazareth was raised from the dead that Sunday morning. Bodily. Tangibly. Personally. He was alive from the dead by the power of God—and proved to be the Son of God with power. And the earth trembled.

Instead of vengeance and punishment for the wrongs done Him, Jesus offered forgiveness. Instead of recriminations against His faithless disciples, He affirmed them to their world-wide mission. Instead of being in bondage to death, He was alive again and giving life to others. And the whole earth trembled—not in terror but in wonder, joy, and amazement.

No wonder there was an earthquake! And we’ll never get over what happened that day. It will continue to dominate our thoughts, fill our conversations, and define our lives.
