TOWARD UNDERSTANDING GOD
“The Father of all mercies and the God of all comfort.” (2 Corinthians 1:3)
In the Old Testament God is pictured in such terms as “The Almighty,” “The Everlasting God,” “The Lord of Hosts,” but in these last days His Son introduces a new term for us, the expression, “Father” (Matthew 6:9). He is as Paul said, “The Father of all mercies and the God of all comfort.”
Jesus taught about God as one having all authority and not as the scribes (Teachers of the Old Testament). His authority was not the hammer breaking stones, but as could be compared to spring melting the snow of winter and bringing out the loveliness of spring. Now “the poor have the gospel preached to them” (Matthew 12:37). “Now the common people heard Him gladly” (Mark 12:37). It was not the dry hard teaching of the Jewish doctors, but it was grace, poured into His lips as was suggested by the Psalmist in 45:2.
If He crossed the lake the people followed around to hear Him. As He passed by on the road they would climb a tree. If they heard He was in a house they would enter by the roof. If He taught from a boat, they gathered on the shore.
He told the poor of riches within their reach. He told the vulgar and evil ones of a kingdom they might inherit. And to those who were weary and tired of life, He invited to come to Him where they could escape the burdens of life. With all the authority of God, His Father, He could say, “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
