DESIRABLE FRIENDSHIPS
“The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray.” (Proverbs 12:26)
We all should be cautious when choosing our friends. In Proverbs 12:26, we are told the wrong friendship can lead us astray. This applies to adults, teens and children.
Those of us who are parents have always tried to guide our children when choosing their friends. Friends have great influences in our lives. We all should strive for good friendships and good influences.
A good quality to look for in a friend is one that loves you in good times and bad as stated in Proverbs 17:17. In James 4:4, we are told a friendship with the world is hatred toward God and anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
3 John 1:11, John wrote to Gaius to thank him and give him encouragement. How many times have we missed opportunities to be a positive influence to those around us. We should take advantage of every opportunity.
Jesus talked to His disciples in John 15:13 and stated, “Greater love has no more than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”
“A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends” (Proverbs 16:28). This verse is telling us to not listen to gossip, that it causes separation among friends. We need to be good listeners. James 1:19 tells us that we should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
Desirable friendships should be very important to the Christian. We need to look for good qualities—honesty, positive influence, wholesome actions, good listeners and many others. God has provided us many verses in the Bible that state what we need to be as a friend and what to look for in a friend.
